Suriname is nominated for a prestigious environmental price by the United Nations

On January 25 th Suriname was chosen as one of the ten finalists by the UNEP and the IUCN to compete for one of five Supporting Entrepreneurs for Environment and Development (SEED) Awards. This award is presented annually to entrepreneurs to serve as an example for sustainable community development to set up small businesses as a result. Among a selection of 230 applicants from 70 countries worldwide by several international experts, the choice for this years' award went to projects engaging in promoting traditional health, community tourism and production of alternative energy sources. From Suriname , the Amazon Conservation Team (ACT) has been considered with the program “Protecting the future by preserving the past: indigenous treatments for complementing conventional healthcare in remote communities in Suriname ”. Other countries that will also compete for the award, which will be presented in May 2007 in New York, are: Brazil, Ecuador, India, Nepal, Kenya, Peru, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Vietnam.

The ACT healthcare program is focused primarily on the integration of traditional healthcare in favor of the communities in South Suriname . Through the establishment of clinics, a traditional system of healthcare has been offered and is being led and taken care of by older shamans. The clinics are built next to medical posts that offer western primary healthcare and possess enough space for different traditional healers to practice. The clinics also offers facilities to apprentices – each one working with a shaman – to learn more about the methods these old wise men use while practicing their centuries old traditional healthcare.

The ACT healthcare program has already won an award in 2002 as Best Program for Protecting Traditional Knowledge by UNESCO and in 2006 the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) announced the program as one of the four worldwide best practices in the field of traditional healthcare.

International Meeting of Traditional healers to exchange Shamanic knowledge to be held Kwamalasamutu, South Suriname.

Between the 10-17 th of March, indigenous healers from South America, North America and Canada will meet in Kwamalasamutu for the second gathering of shamans. This “Krutu fu sabiman” is organized by the Amazon Conservation Team (ACT), which promotes and integrates traditional knowledge for the benefit of the indigenous communities in Suriname, Colombia and Brazil.

The overall goal of the meeting is to exchange the healer's knowledge between various cultures with demonstrations and shared experiences. The gathering is requested by the healers themselves, as a follow up of a similar event hosted by the Waura peoples in the Xingu indigenous reserve in Brazil in 2006.

The first session of the meeting , dedicated to the academic society, will be held on March 10th in Paramaribo . In collaboration with University staff, pharmacists, shamans, health experts we will discuss the traditional healing systems and demonstrate the contribution to western healthcare in Suriname . One unique event will be the shamans discussing their way of diagnosis and disease and healing concepts. Indigenous healers demonstrated to have a significant contribution to healthcare in the past e.g curare, which is now used as a body relaxant before surgery so that the endo tracheal tube can be inserted into the windpipe.

For indigenous peoples, good health means a balance between mind, body, spirit, culture and most importantly the land they live on. Accordingly, the second session to be held in the indigenous Trio village of Kwamalasamutu from 12-17 March, focuses on promoting intercultural dialogue and understanding and foster discussions regarding the protection of biodiversity, strengthening traditional medicine and improvement of health. The gathering will eventually contribute to a comprehensive perspective about health, also reflected by WHO's definition of health, that covers natural geographical, social and spiritual dimensions of life – related to each other in a network of interdependencies.

Deze prijs wordt jaarlijks uitgereikt aan een initiatief dat als voorbeeld kan dienen voor duurzame gemeenschaps-ontwikkeling, welke uitkomst biedt voor het opzetten van kleine ondernemingen. Uit een selectie van 230 applicanten uit 70 landen wereldwijd door een tiental internationale experts, is de keuze gevallen op projecten die zich bezig houden met promotie van traditionele geneeskunde, gemeenschaps toerisme en produktie van alternatieve energiebronnen. Voor Suriname is de Stichting Amazon Conservation Team (ACT) in aanmerking gekomen met het programma “Protecting the future by preserving the past: i ndigenous treatments for complementing conventional healthcare in remote communities in Suriname ”. De overige landen die verder meedingen naar de prijs, die in Mei 2007 in New York zal worden uitgereikt zijn: Brazilië , Ecuador , India , Nepal , Kenya , Peru , Sierra Leone , Tanzania en Vietnam www.seedinit.org.

Internationale bijeenkomst van traditionele genezers in Kwamalasamutu, Zuid Suriname

In de week van 10 – 17 maart zullen inheemse genezers uit Zuid- en Noord Amerika bijeenkomen in Kwamalasamutu voor de tweede bijeenkomst van sjamanen. Deze “Krutu fu Sabiman” wordt georganiseerd door de Amazon Conservation Team (ACT), die zich bezig houdt met de promotie en integratie van traditionele kennis ten voordele van inheemse gemeenschappen in Suriname, Colombia en Brazilië.

Het algemeen doel van deze meeting is om een uitwisseling van kennis tussen de verschillende culturen te bewerkstelligen middels demonstraties en delen van ervaringen. De genezers deden een aanvraag tot het organiseren van deze meeting als vervolg op een soortgelijk gebeuren bij de waura's in het Xingu inheems reservaat in Brazilie in 2006.

Het eerste gedeelte van de meeting is bestemd voor de academia en zal plaatsvinden op 10 maart in Paramaribo. In samenwerking met de Medische Zending en de ADEK Universiteit van Suriname, zullen farmaceuten, sjamanen en gezondheids experts discussies voeren over de wijze waarop het traditioneel gezondheids system kan bijdragen aan de gezondheidszorg in Suriname. Een uniek moment zal het moment zijn waarop sjamanen hun manier van diagnose en kennis van ziekten en genezing naar voren zullen brengen. Inheemse genezers hebben bewezen in het verleden een wezenlijke bijdrage te hebben geleverd aan de gezondheidszorg, bijvoorbeeld curare, het middel dat momenteel gebruikt wordt als relaxant alvorens te opereren.

Voor de inheemsen betekent gezond zijn een evenwicht tussen mentale rust, lichaam en geest en bovenal het land waarop ze leven. Derhalve, de tweede bijeenkomst gehouden in het inheems Trio dorp Kwamalasamutu van 12-17 maart, richt zich op promotie en uitwisseling van traditionele kennis, en koestert discussies omtrent het beschermen van biodiversiteit, versterken van traditionele geneeswijze en bevorderen van gezondheid.
